Day 1: (Thursday afternoon or evening*)
We
will start by fetching you at the Keflavik International Airport as you disembark
from your continental Europe to Iceland flight, either in the afternoon, from
Copenhagen (Kastrup) or late evening from London (Stansted) and
whisk you off to Reykjavik (about 30 miles from the airport). For those arriving
early enough, we'll be stopping off on the way at the renowned Blue-Lagoon geothermal
power plant and bathing resort for a quick swim and early taste of Iceland.
Overnight
place of stay in Reykjavík or close vicinity.
Days
2 and 3 :(Friday and Saturday)
Leaving
Reykjavík early in the morning, for our destination which this weekend,
will be hiking tour of Þórsmörk, one of Iceland's most renowned
beauty spots. Þórsmörk is a sort of enclave surrounded on three
sides by spectacular glaciers, and only accessible by (4x4) vehicles which, in
order to reach it, have to ford more than 20 brooks and streams!
On
our way there, we will start by admiring the Gígjökull
glacial lagoon, explore the majestic Stakkholtsgjá
gorge on foot and generally exploring Þórsmörk, starting
north of the river Krossá, climbing perhaps the mount Valahnúkur from whose summit one can enjoy a compelling
view of the nearby glaciers. Other possibilities include going and marvelling
at the bizarre rock formations at Stóriendi, ascending the mount Rjúpnafell
and exploring Emstrur or climing the fells of Útigönguhöfði
and Morinsheiði, and generally just exploring the magnificent Þórsmörk
valley. Dinner (own cooked!) and overnight stay will be at either one of the
fully equipped hiking cabins in the Þórsmörk valley.
Day
4: (Sunday)
Further
hiking in Þórsmörk until lunchtime or early afternoon. Return
to Reykjavík, by way of the celebrated Seljalandsfoss
waterfall, Selfoss and Hveragerði, the greenhouse village, in the late afternoon.
Duration of tour: 3 days, 2 nights.
