Leaving early for a leisurely drive
through western Iceland, via Hvalfjörður (the Bay of Whales) with it's majestic
scenery and World War II relics, we will arrive in the middle of the morning at
the regional capital Borgarnes
which is splendidly situated on bay of Faxaflói. Pursuing our trip northwards
passing through several lava fields , we will
be passing through the county of Mýrar which adorns one of the country's most
beautifully shaped volcanic craters,the Eldborg. We will then cross over the
Snæfellsnes mountain range over the new road beside the lake Baulárvallavatn in
order to arrive around noontime at the picturesque fishing village of Stykkishólmur,
situated on the northern shores of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. After a short
break for lunch (not included), we set off at 13:30 for a 2,5 hour long boat trip
and cruise among some of the innumerable islands on the Breiðafjörður Bay, admiring
on the way the extremely varied bird life (kittiwakes, shags, cormorants, puffins,etc)
and we even have a very good chance of spotting the Icelandic white tailed eagle
on one of the islands. Other islands are justly reputed for their very strange
rock formations (pillar basalt and
lava). Cruising among the islands, we will probably spot a curious seal or
two popping their heads out of the water to watch us!Then we will arrive just
in time to see a spectacular display of the forces of nature as the extremely
powerful marine currents force their way through a narrow strait
between two islands in and out of the bay of Hvammsfjörður. On the way back
to Stykkishólmur, the crew will demonstrate the use of a shellfish dredge and
you will be offered to taste the catch: clams and mussels as fresh as they come!
Return to Reykjavík, via the valley of Heydalur harboring some more volcanic craters
and lava fields, and the long tunnel under
the waters of bay of Hvalfjörður in the very late afternoon. Duration of tour:
